Abstract

Problem Statement.

In today's world, kiosks are present in almost every commercial setting and provide a range of services such as providing information, facilitating self-service, and enabling transactions. Despite their importance in our daily lives, a significant population of individuals with motor disabilities are deprived of their services. Additionally, the large amount of physical interaction poses a significant hygiene risk.
Abstract

Solution.

We aim to solve this by changing the way we interact with kiosks. UCL MotionInput can be used to make the interaction completely touchless by allowing hand gesture inputs. This will provide a more hygienic option for users, as they will not require physical contact with the kiosk surface. The additional forms of input, coupled with a friendly user interface, will greatly increase the accessibility of these kiosks.
Abstract

Achievement & Impact.

Our team successfully created a touchless kiosk system that's controlled by hand gestures, with a resilient design that automatically relaunches if it crashes. We've added crowd detection to track only the active user's hand, improving accuracy and the user experience. Plus, we've made a web extension which provides a live animated preview of the user's gestures and enables our software to be used with any web-based kiosk UI, making it versatile and adaptable.

To ensure that our kiosk solution was user-friendly and effective, we conducted extensive user testing and received valuable feedback. We also showcased our project to the CIO of Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) and collected additional feedback, which we used to refine and improve our touchless kiosk system.

Overall, our achievements have resulted in a highly effective and innovative touchless kiosk solution that has the potential to make a tangible impact on the self-service industry.
